Vintage Brass Floral Micro Mosaic Pill/Snuff Box
This oval shaped Micro Mosaic pill box features a delicate floral bouquet adorned by a dark green background all made from small intricately placed glass tiles. The body of this pill box features an ornately designed brass tone body featuring scrollwork, leaves and other intricate designs.
The term “micro mosaic” was coined by the 20th century collector Sir Arthur Gilbert in reference to the Roman mosaics composed of small glass bricks called tesserae. Packed with 1,500 to 5,000 pieces per square inch, this type of miniature mosaic was sold as fine jewelry to women in the early and mid-19th century, when the tourism trade blossomed in Rome. Today, two other types of jewelry the Florentine "pietra dura" and Venetian mosaic also fall under the terms of micro mosaics from the Victorian era.
