Scarce 1900s antique micromosaic heart pill box

Description

It is rare to find an antique heart-shaped Italian micromosaic pill box. This adorable pill box has a delicate and very fine floral motif. The colors of the micromosaic are still vivid and its condition is excellent with no tesserae missing. Fascinating work, this Italian micromosaic artistry! It became fashionable when the remains of
Pompeii
were discovered in 1748 under the ashes of the 79 AD eruption of Vesuvius, and the first micromosaic pieces made in
Naples
and
Rome
were miniatures of temple ruins and copies of the frescos found in the villas of
Pompeii
. Later they became highly desirable 'souvenir' items bought by tourists visiting
Italy
. Today, the collectors are numerous and a piece like this is sought after because of its highly artistic work made with very fine mosaic elements. The box measures just short of 2” x 1¾” (45 x 43 mm).
It is obviously mounted on brass.
The base is adorned with a rope twist garland. There are a few dents on the back.
