    Description

Rare Vintage Gold Palmolive Compact Rouge c 1923
    Palmolive Branded Vanity Case
Powder still in it but is slightly used. Truly a rare one of a kind find
    A single rouge compact case
As far as I can tell, the appearance of
    Palmolive
branded vanity cases followed the release of the
    Cleopatra Divine
line and can be dated to about 1920. But just as the branding of the products was haphazard so, too, was the branding of the containers. At least three different fonts were used for the name
    Palmolive
    stamped onto their vanity cases.
As for the cases, themselves there is evidence of an oval, oblong face powder and rouge compact that was marketed and branded as the
    Palmolive Vanity.
This was the standard shape and size used by many early adopters of such metal vanity cases but examples are hard to find. The case itself was based on a 1922-patented invention by the Father of American compacts – William Kendall. In all likelihood it would have been manufactured by The Scovill Manufacturing Company of Waterbury, CT.
    My research suggests that
    Palmolive’s
first foray into the world of metal vanity cases lasted only until 1923 when a new cosmetics line was created. The name
    Fanchon
was trademarked in December 1922 and after 1923 I can find no evidence of any case stamped on the cover with the word
    Palmolive.
Later case decorations were very muted in comparison to the earlier containers. One example is a very plainly decorated case manufactured by The Zinn Corporation of Bristol CT with the word
    Palmolive
in small letters stamped on the side of the case.
