Rare Vintage Original Illustration from the 1947 Chesapeake and Ohio Calendar Featuring Chessie Cat and her Kittens cats with toy trains. Chessie was a popular cat character used as a symbol of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway. Derived from an etching by Viennese artist Guido Gruenwald, the image first appeared in an advertisement in the September 1933 issue of Fortune magazine with the slogan Sleep Like a Kitten and Wake Up Fresh as a Daisy in Air-Conditioned Comfort.
This version of Chessie for the Chesapeake and Ohio 1947 Calender was done by Charles E. Bracker (1895 - 1955) who lived in Port Chester, NY during the WWII period. He won the Art Directors Award in New York twice during the early 1940s. His work was exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He was known for illustrating Chesapeake and Ohio Calendars in the late 1930s and early 1940s. He also illustrated childrens books, the most notable were: Zic-Zac the Crocodile Bird (written by Rita Kissin and illustrated by Charles Bracker) and Raffy (also written by Rita Kissin and illustrated by Charles Bracker). He wrote and illustrated Chester, a popular childrens book. He died on January 2, 1955 in Riverside, California.
