This masterfully crafted continental silver and enamel
minaudière
was made around the 1920s, probably in Austria or Germany, and features an ornately decorated outer case with
black and green enamel. Pulling a little ball on the side of the piece reveals a little pencil which can used to make notes on the panel behind the inside mirror.
The sides and opening catches are mounted with round sapphire cabochons.
The interior has three gilt silver lidded compartments with an interior lipstick mirror. The case lids are decorated with wheel cut designs and
blue enamel borders.
The demand for a carrying case accessory such as the minaudière rose after the First World War and the development of feminine cosmetic products. Jewelers saw the opportunity that the trend presented and created small carrying cases that were influenced by similar pieces that had appeared in France during the 18th century. The clean lines and quality of the enamel work of this piece is characteristic of the Art Deco style.
Measures 3 1/4" long x 1 3/4" wide x 1" high and weighs an impressive 154.5 grams. Very good antique condition with some patina according to age which can easily be polished away if desired.
