19th Century ANTIQUE SEWING BASKET, Large size 14 1/4 inches wide,10 inches tall

Large 19th century antique American lidded sewing basket with superb patina. Beautiful construction. Measurements: 14 1/4 inches across top rim, 10 7/8 inches across bottom, 9 1/8 inches tall at the rim plus about an additional inch for the slightly domed lid, 9 5/8 inches deep from front to back at the top, 7 inches deep from front to back at the bottom. Baskets like this are sometimes found in much smaller sizes and are occasionally attributed to the Shakers but I don’t know if those attributions are correct. I have not been able to verify that attribution.
The basket is missing a handle and a closure. We have provided photos of the small holes, two in front and two in back, that are just below the edge of the top rim and through which there would have been looped curved pieces that were attached to a swing handle. There is also evidence of the missing closure at the front center of the lid where there is extra wrapping. There are a few places that have been photographed on the top and bottom rims where there is some missing wrapping. Otherwise the basket is in superb overall condition with beautiful brown patina.
