Description
1901 Antique Planimeter. aka Platometer or Polar Planimeter. From the Engineering and Maps Department of the Union Pacific in Denver. I think this tool was used to measure and calculate surfaces as depicted on site maps. It would have been useful for determining the surface area of irregularly shaped (Without straight borders) tracts of land. I've heard it would be useful for determining the surface area for bodies of water. A customer provided another explanation that indicated the tool would be useful for conducting measurements of steam displacement within a train's boiler. Check out the finish of this tool in the photos. Very little wear to the plated parts. Finials show some brass. Not messed with , cleaned or polished n any way.Condition is exactly as purchased at a UP liquidation of excess assets 1n 1970. The faux leather case shows signs of wear. It is lined with purple velvet that would benefit from a good blowout. The painted number on the case is a UP asset number. This same number is visible on the instrument (scratched in). Check out the photos to establish condition and feel free to ask any questions. Sorry, NO international sales.
